Alicia Keys Rocks “Bridal Goddess” Style : Look and Learn!

Early August featured numerous high-profile celebrity weddings, and of course, amazing bridal gowns! Read on and learn from her flawless style choices!

Alicia Keys chose a  stunning, Grecian-inspired Vera Wang gown in an ivory silk,   for her Mediterranean wedding to mega-producer Swizz Beatz. (Tip for brides: a one-shouldered flowy gown creates an elegant, but exotic vibe, perfect for destination or beach weddings!)

The Grammy winner’s gown featured  jeweled detail on her back shoulder, which perfectly matched her crystal-encrusted flat sandals. (Tip for brides: a dress does not always need a lot of beading to make an impact. Minimal, but perfectly placed beading  can be both beautiful and dramatic. Also- it is ok to wear flats with your gown! As long as your shoes are fabulous, they are appropriate!)

An elegant headband (this was actually a necklace used as a headpiece) and a bouquet of colorful purple calla lillies completed her modern goddess look. (Tip for brides: be creative with your accessories! It is completely on-trend and acceptable to re-purpose your jewelry and other accessories. If you love something, find a way to work it into your overall bridal look. And remember- your flowers do not have to be white! Have fun with color!)

Chelsea Clinton’s Beautiful Wedding Gown Choice

Photo from StyleList.

Political viewpoints aside, let’s face it. The wedding of a President’s (or former President’s) daughter is the closest thing to a royal wedding that Americans will witness. The New York wedding of Chelsea Clinton most certainly provided wedding aficionados with much to be excited about!

From the secrecy concerning the wedding dress designer to the mysterious wedding day updo hidden by a large floppy hat, wedding fashionistas FINALLY have the answers they have been seeking.

Chelsea Clinton wore an ivory Vera Wang wedding dress (as many predicted!) to exchange vows in an interfaith ceremony before a reported 400-500 guests, including Vera Wang herself.

The strapless Vera Wang dress featured a diagonally draped bodice, ballgown skirt made out of raw edged, swirling silk organza, and a train in silk tulle, a spokesperson for the bridal brand told reporters. (Tip for brides: a well fitted bodice atop a full skirt creates a beautiful, youthful, princess-like silhouette that flatters many body types!)

Clinton’s  waist was cinched with a crystal-encrusted belt also by the designer, while her hair was pulled back and accented by a long traditional Vera Wang tulle veil. She complemented her gorgeous gown with a simple bouquet of white hydrangeas.  (Tip for brides: don’t be afraid to add your own personalized accent to a dress! Chelsea added this sparkly belt, which definitely stepped up the formality of the gown. You could add a ribbon sash, an antique pin, or extra beading!)

Mezvinsky reportedly wore a tuxedo by Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey, who also designed ties for the groomsmen.

To suit the dressy event, female guests were seen wearing formal floor-length gowns, including the mother of the bride who looked amazing in an elegant raspberry-hued dress with puffy shoulders and a tied waist by Oscar de la Renta. Bill Clinton wore a  black suit and narrow tie. (Tip for brides: let your parents select colors and styles that will flatter them and let them shine! They aren’t bridesmaids and groomsmen (so they don’t need lots of rules), they deserve to feel happy and confident on your big day!)

Carrie Underwood: what we can learn from the ultimate fashionista bride!

Photos of Carrie Underwood’s wedding gown are FINALLY emerging (the image above is from People Magazine) and it appears that Carrie chose an amazing gown! Carrie Underwood’s wedding dress was a full chantilly lace and silk organza ball gown, accented with a pink satin ribbon sash. It was designed by Monique Lhuillier. The dress was then transformed into a cocktail dress right after the ceremony to allow for dancing and socializing at the reception.

Carrie focused on two fun bridal fashion concepts on her big day:

1. She included a subtle pop of color in her wedding gown. The soft pink coordinated with the colors of her flowers, decor, and bridesmaid dresses. Brides: do not be afraid of color! If you have a favorite hue, incorporate it into your look through your jewelry, a sash, or even your shoes (brightly colored shoes with a white or ivory wedding gown are a major trend right now!).

2. Carrie also transformed her look after the wedding ceremony ended. Her full ball gown was a perfect choice for the romantic wedding, but she wanted a more relaxed look (cocktail dress) for the reception. Even if you cannot purchase two dresses for your big day, don’t be shy about changing your look for the reception! Even a change in hairstyle will freshen your look and provide some fun and different photos for your wedding album.

Bridal Hair Accessories for the Fashionista

Feather accessory by Bel Aire

What is the easiest way to do something new and different when creating your bridal look? Try a fabulously different hair accessory! We just got lots of amazingly cute new accessories in last week, including collections from Giselle and Bel Aire featuring feathers, flowers, and lace accents.

To select the best look for your own wedding, consider what your wedding gown looks like. A beachy, flowing chiffon dress for your destination wedding would look beautiful with a simple flower-accented hair accessory.

A sophisticated and high-fashion mermaid gown could look even more stylish and on-trend with a fun feather accessory.

A classic A-line dress could look traditional but contemporary with a lace headband.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Another idea is to don a traditional veil for the ceremony, but switch to a fun and funky hair accessory for the reception!

Wedding Day Hair Formality

One of our most recent brides, Laura Jones, had an interesting question. Does putting your hair in an up-do change the formality of a bride’s wedding day look? What an excellent question! The answer is: it depends. Here’s what I told Laura . . . .

1. If you have a simple dress and want to look more formal, than having an updo can bump up the degree of formality
2. If your dress is extravagant with lots of detail, the dress is actually setting the degree of formality. So, it really doesn’t matter whether your hair is up or down if your dress is elaborate.

Here are some other things to consider . . .

When wearing a strapless dress: hair up or down is great; consider if you want to show off your shoulders or hide them

When wearing a halter: hair up looks fabulous especially with the shape of the halter; a bride’s neck looks long and elegant when combining the neckline the halter makes

When wearing a spaghetti strap/sleeves/dress with more coverage: Hair up or down looks great

WANT THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS? Hair part up/down is the best choice! This way a bride’s hair is up off the face, but shows off the length of a bride’s hair (if length is a feature the bride wants to show). Just remember that having hair down can get a little warm and it could cover the back detail of a dress!

Homecoming Hair and Accessories

You’ve found a great dress, but how are you going to wear your hair? This is one of the biggest questions our sales consultants ask young ladies once they have found the perfect dress for homecoming (or any occasion). We ask this question to see not only how a customer’s hair will look, but what type of accessories the customer should wear with the dress. Here are some rules to follow:

1. If the dress is simple, you can wear your hair up or down with some chunky or blingy/sparkly accessories.
2. If the dress has a lot going on (beading/has a print/intricate design) don’t mess with the dress and ruin it with too many accessories. Keep hair and accessories simple.
3. If the dress is simple but has an intricate neckline/bodice, wear some great earrings with your hair up or down. Sometimes adding a necklace will make it look too busy so beware.
4. If the dress is strapless with a simple neckline, play around with a simple necklace with some bigger earrings (or big necklace with small earrings) to see what might go best. I know I always prefer customers to have great earrings with no necklace to show off those bare shoulders!
5. ALWAYS GO MORE SIMPLE WHEN IN DOUBT!

If you’re still unsure about the hair and accessories, use some of these pictures of celebrities to help you!

Notice how Angelina did a simple black dress with gorgeous chunky earrings? No necklace needed to show off her shoulders!

Hair up, simple earrings, with a chunky necklace, simple dress . . . perfection!

Notice how all of the celebrities above all did necklaces, but they also all did simple earrings too!
Don’t let your jewelry wear you, you wear the jewelry!

Bridal Buzz: Hair Extensions

Bridal magazines will tell brides that if they want the perfect bridal hair and they don’t have enough length, to get hair extensions. I was at the salon we recommend to all of our brides, Salon Emage, with my stylist Ashley. Ashley is the pro with hair extensions and when I asked about them, she couldn’t tell me enough! The extensions they use at Salon Emage are made of real human hair and are bonded to your hair with protein so it won’t damage your real hair. The cost per extension is $10 and they can even do colors like pink, purple, blue, orange etc. or do a whole panel so your hair looks longer and fuller. Depending on the strength of your hair, how often you wash it, along with how often you brush or style your hair, extensions can last 3 to 6 months. Suddenly, Ashley came up with an interesting idea. For those brides or bridesmaids that have a little edge with their personal style, why not put colored hair extensions in for a little splash of color in your bridesmaid’s hair or even your own? If you want the more traditional route, you can also get extensions that match your natural hair color too. I thought it was an interesting take on bridal/formal hairstyles and I’d like to know what you think too!
