Chelsea Clinton’s Beautiful Wedding Gown Choice

Photo from StyleList.

Political viewpoints aside, let’s face it. The wedding of a President’s (or former President’s) daughter is the closest thing to a royal wedding that Americans will witness. The New York wedding of Chelsea Clinton most certainly provided wedding aficionados with much to be excited about!

From the secrecy concerning the wedding dress designer to the mysterious wedding day updo hidden by a large floppy hat, wedding fashionistas FINALLY have the answers they have been seeking.

Chelsea Clinton wore an ivory Vera Wang wedding dress (as many predicted!) to exchange vows in an interfaith ceremony before a reported 400-500 guests, including Vera Wang herself.

The strapless Vera Wang dress featured a diagonally draped bodice, ballgown skirt made out of raw edged, swirling silk organza, and a train in silk tulle, a spokesperson for the bridal brand told reporters. (Tip for brides: a well fitted bodice atop a full skirt creates a beautiful, youthful, princess-like silhouette that flatters many body types!)

Clinton’s  waist was cinched with a crystal-encrusted belt also by the designer, while her hair was pulled back and accented by a long traditional Vera Wang tulle veil. She complemented her gorgeous gown with a simple bouquet of white hydrangeas.  (Tip for brides: don’t be afraid to add your own personalized accent to a dress! Chelsea added this sparkly belt, which definitely stepped up the formality of the gown. You could add a ribbon sash, an antique pin, or extra beading!)

Mezvinsky reportedly wore a tuxedo by Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey, who also designed ties for the groomsmen.

To suit the dressy event, female guests were seen wearing formal floor-length gowns, including the mother of the bride who looked amazing in an elegant raspberry-hued dress with puffy shoulders and a tied waist by Oscar de la Renta. Bill Clinton wore a  black suit and narrow tie. (Tip for brides: let your parents select colors and styles that will flatter them and let them shine! They aren’t bridesmaids and groomsmen (so they don’t need lots of rules), they deserve to feel happy and confident on your big day!)

Appointments vs. Walk-ins: The Advantages of Having Your Own Sales Consultant

Gavin Micheals Style 910 2Be Bride

Gavin Micheals Bridal Gown by 2Be Bridal

Our store has been bustling with customers lately, especially with brides, bridesmaids and mother of the brides or grooms.  As a sales consultant, I want to cater to all customers and provide them with one on one attention they all deserve.  However, if customers want my undivided attention, I highly recommend making an appointment.  While I love working with walk-ins, I know I sometimes don’t feel like I am truly giving the customer service our store prides itself on when I have to multitask between customers that are making important decisions.  Here are the advantages of making an appointment with one of our consultants:

1. Customers receive one on one attention for an hour and a half for bridal appointments and half an hour to an hour for other appointments.

2.  Patrons receive better expertise since a sales consultant is dedicated to them

3. Interruptions are minimized between sales consultants and walk-in customers

4.  Appointments receive priority over other customers that are walk-ins; otherwise customers taken on a first come first serve basis

5.  Customers are more satisfied with the products they buy when a knowledgeable consultant has been with the customer through the entire process

6.  Customers gain more knowledge about etiquette, styles, and fit when a sales consultant is with the customer from beginning to end

Please note that the majority of our customers are walk-ins, but for the big decisions customers make, it’s better to have one person from our staff be with them.  Otherwise customers should be prepared to be patient if a consultant has to multitask between many different customers.  To make an appointment is easy.  Call or email our store and a consultant will set up an appropriate time for you so you can get the one on one attention you deserve!

Popular Dresses for Mothers

Mothers always have a difficult time finding dresses for weddings. Most of the time, the mothers know what they want, they just can’t find it. Their fear is that they will look dowdy or that they just won’t find something they like. We know and understand what they want! Our boutique has a great selection of mother’s dresses, but many times, mothers are hesitant to try them on. I will admit that many of the dresses do not have “hanger appeal” and do not look flattering on the rack. Just like with wedding gowns, dresses are not meant to be looked at on a hanger! They are meant to be tried on! Most mothers are pleasantly surprised (after some persuasion) with the styles we have and the recommendations our sales consultants give them. Here are some of the most popular and flattering styles of mother’s dresses we carry.

Bridal Buzz: Black Bridesmaid Dresses

Traditionally, black is not a color to wear to a wedding or to even have as an accent color for a wedding. However, many brides are choosing the color for their bridesmaid dresses. Not only does the color match just about any other color the bride chooses to have in her wedding, but it makes the bride stand out even more. Photographs turn out great because the black makes a great contrast. Plus, black truly is a color bridesmaids can wear again and a black dress is more easily accessible than trying to match one shade of a particular color.

Many mothers have come to us and asked “Is it appropriate to have black as a wedding color?” Much to their upset, our consultants tell them that it is a huge trend. Brides also choose to have a bright color or colors for accents so the tone doesn’t seem as dismal as many might think. Many women continue to think it’s inappropriate.

There are many cases when black is inappropriate to wear. If a mother of the bride or groom wears black it’s a huge faux pas! This indicates to others that the mother is unhappy with the union. However, if a mother asks the bride’s permission if she can wear black and the bride says it’s ok, it is a little more accepted. As a wedding guest, it’s becoming more widely accepted that wearing black is appropriate. For example, my aunt wore a little black dress to my wedding and I didn’t think twice simply because I knew she was happy for me and she attended my wedding. She was there, and that’s all that mattered! The color of dress was insignificant to me!

We want to know what you think! Is black appropriate to have at a wedding?

Featured Customer: Mrs. Nancy School (Mother of the Bride)

At our store, we highly value our customers. One of our most recent (and fun) customers, Mrs. Nancy School, a third grade teacher at Cedar Point Elementary School in Bristow, Virginia and future mother of the bride had her first fitting with our experienced seamstress Patti. Nancy first came into our store to take advantage of our huge Black Friday Sale with one mission in mind: find the perfect dress to wear to her daughter’s wedding on May 16th of this year. Her daughter and blushing bride, Molly, chose pale yellow and clover green for her wedding colors. Naturally, Nancy wanted to find a dress in a coordinating color that would flatter her figure, but make her feel important and beautiful at the same time. I knew of the perfect designer for Nancy. The designer Jade by Jasmine had some beautiful gowns in chiffon that were perfect for a May wedding taking place outdoors and had coordinating jackets too. After trying a few on, Nancy decided to order one of our most popular Jade gowns, style J8807. She looked stunning in the chiffon, v-neck, tiered gown. The color she chose was canary diamond, a perfect pale yellow to coordinate with her daughter’s colors. She also ordered a chiffon cape to match!

Our seamstress, Patti, pinning the dress.

Nancy chose clear wedges to wear with just a little sparkle to match the beading in the dress.

Voila! A gorgeous mother of the bride! You look amazing Nancy!

From all of us at A Formal Affair we just want you to know how beautiful you look! Congratulations to Nancy, her husband Fran, and of course to the happy couple Molly and Bruno! Send us pictures!
